Our memories help define who we are. Without our memories, life would be a meaningless existence where one could not recall experiences. With our memory we are able to do so much such as making decisions based on past experiences. However the use of some drugs, the optimal use of our memories can no longer be achievable.

The temporary storage of memories, our short-term memory, has the capability to return information between a couple of seconds to several hours. Depending the individual, the time it takes to process our short term memories to long varies. Most of our short-term memories are information that has been registered by our sensory organs. Other uses of this type of memory range from temporarily memorizing numbers to visual images. Due to its constant use, it is necessary to protect it from factors that can cause it harm. Damages to the medial temporal lobe and hippocampus, which was once thought to affect our long-term memory, directly affects our short-term memory.
